Haiti January HBB Courses Postponed 

 

 

     Due to political unrest and probable  disruption of transportation and other services during January we have been advised by our coordinator in Port au Prince to postpone our  courses.  We have rescheduled  the course in PAP to February 11,12,13,14.  They exact time and dates will be determined in the next week.  The new dates will coincide with a national meeting for neonatal and maternal health on February 13, 14 in PAP.  We apologize for any inconvenience this change may have made for participants and instructors. We hope that all can make arrangements to allow participation during the new dates. Please advise us if you can still participate.

            Haiti 2013 HBB  --  PAP and Leogane  -- Survey Results

We’d like to thank all those who have assisted in HBB training in the last year.  We have just completed our 6th month survey of the 125 participants of the Master Trainer courses in Leogane and PAP held in

 The results are summarized below:

• 71 participants completed the survey

• 1380 more people were trained by the course participants

• 650 bags & masks and 75 training kits were distributed to birthing facilities and midwives

• 10% of participants reported successful bag & mask resuscitation of at least 1 newborn

• 60% of the respondents reported ongoing training efforts

  

New AAP Global Resource Page

       The AAP has just released a valuable new resource.   It is called the Global Resource Page and can be accessed through the link on this page. It makes available for the first time electronic copies of both the HBB and Essential Newborn Care materials.  The materials are offered in multiple languages.  This resource will, in my opinion, greatly enhance our ability to conduct HBB courses in resource poor countries. 

Up-Coming HBB and NRP courses

We thank you all who have previously helped with courses.  We are now in the process of completing our post-course survey and will share the results when this process is completed.  Due to the unrest in Gaza, we have rescheduled our HBB and NRP courses until Spring of 2015.  Our 2nd trip to Myanmar is currently planned for Nov 15th - 26th where we will be teaching HBB master trainer courses in Shan and Kayin States.
Two HBB courses are planned in PAP and St Marc, Haiti for the week of Jan 19, 2015.  We are seeking instructors with French and Haitian Creole fluency.

    Two HBB master trainer courses were held  with cooperation of the Leogane Nursing School, the National Medical and Nursing Schools, and the Haitian Pediatric Society. Participants numbered 43 in Leogane and included many of the senior nursing students.  Participants numbered 70 in Port au Prince and included 45 senior medical and nursing students. Many of the students developed plans to teach HBB during their upcoming year of social service.  Discussions were held with Dr. Cadet , Dean of the Medical School. He expressed a need for a Creole translation of the HBB materials to better reach the many midwives in the rural areas. The possibility of a multi year relationship with the national schools was discussed including a rotation for selected students to become part of the yearly training team.

  Two HBB  Master Trainer were conducted in  the Shan and Kayin States in coordination with the MOH. The courses were supported by an NGO, CDA (Community Development Association), under the direction of Dr. Win.  The course utilized the translation in the Myanmar language of HBB.  Participants numbered 38 in Hpa-an and 42 in Taunggyi and represented about half of the townships in each of the states. Five training kits were left with each of the state MOH.  Multiplier courses have been conducted  in each of the states in the past few months.  Three CDA associated doctors were trained and used as instructors during the courses. They plan to train in all the townships in Kayin State in 2014.  An second course is planned in 2014 by LDSC in the Shan state to reach the remaining townships.  An additional course is planned for Kayah State.

Two HBB master trainer course were conducted with the cooperation with the BYU Jerusalem Center, the Palestinian Pediatric Society, and the Palestinian MOH. Participants numbered 43 in Ramallah and 45 in Bethlehem.  Plans are well under way to conduct multiplier courses in remote areas of the Palestinian territories.  An advanced NRP course is planned in partnership with the Palestinian Pediatric Society in the latter half of 2014.

A HBB master trainer course was conducted at the Midwifery School in Hinche. Participants included  current midwife students, staff at the school, and other local midwives.  The local school is supported by Midwives for Haiti and is directed by Dr. Martha Geodert. The participants numbered 34 and included 4 midwives who traveled from St Marc to attend. The midwife school supports a traveling in-service and support group for many local midwives. HBB training is planned to be included in future training and at the local hospital in Hinche.

A two day HBB master trainer course was conducted in Cap Hatien with support of  Hands UP For Haiti. Participants numbered 45 and included staff and residents from Hospital Justinene, local clinic doctors and nurses, and local midwives.  Hands Up for Haiti, under the direction of Drs. Tom Lacy and Jill Ratner conducted two one day courses following the course training an additional 65 midwives. Several more courses are planned in the coming months.

A two day HBB Master Trainer Course was conducted in Les Cayes with support of the Maison de Naissance Foundation founced by Stan Shaffer. Dr. Shaffer has been teaching neonatal resuscitation for many years in Haiti.  He supports a clinic in Les Cayes to provide pre-natal care and delivery support for the local population. Participants numbered 43. Kyra Abbott will provide follow up support. The MOH was in attendance and desires to have on going training in the region.

This trip was mainly for development of future HBB courses in Haiti.  We were accompanied by Dr. Tom Lacy in Cap Hatien whose NGO, Hands Up For Haiti has had presence in the North for several years.  They support clinics with rotating docs form the USA and are active in neonatal resuscitation training.  We were able to meet with the MOH for the North, Dr. Jasmine, and present the HBB  concepts to him. He was supportive and will assist us in a roll out of HBB in the North.  We conducted a one day HBB course to Residents and staff of the Hospital Justinene in Cap Hatien .  Participants numbered 23.  In Port au Prince we were able to meet  with the Director of the National Midwifery School.  She in supportive of included he students in a future course.  I conducted a one day introductory course to the staff of Grace Childrens Hopsital. They have monthly in service training for over 100 local midwives.  They are interested in participation in future courses.

Two Master Trainer courses were conducted in cooperation with the two major hospitals in Cape Verde.  The SBA curriculum was utilized base on the first three chapters of AAP NRP 5th Edition. Participants numbered 43 in Praia and 48 in Mindelo.  Five local instructors augmented the visiting LDSC team at each location.  Since the initial training the local trainers have held similar courses at all the outlying hospitals and clinics in the country, most on other smaller islands in the Cape Verde complex.

   In cooperation with UNICEF we conducted  two master trainer courses using the SBA (skilled birth attendant) curriculum based on the first three chapters of AAP NRP.  Participants numbered 42 in Patna and 38 in Dibrugarh.  Highlights of the trip included visiting the tea gardens in Assam and a Mother Teresa memorial in Patna.

   Three Courses were taught in cooperation with the Indian Pediatric Society.  A modified skilled birth attendant curriculum was taught. Course participants numbered 38 in Varanasi, 42 in Gwalior, and 32 in Agra. Most were doctors. In Agra the participants were nurses and midwives.

Our first trip as Short Term Specialist.  George and Marcia Bennett were our trainers.  Much of what we do today follows their example.  We developed a course in Bucharest and taught a NRP course in Tirana, Albania for 38 participants.


 

   HBB Master Trainer Course 25 Jan 2014 -- Salt Lake City
  I was involved in a intensive HBB MasterTrainer Course January 25 2014 in Salt Lake City.  The course was sponsored by Latter Day Saint Humanitarian Services under the direction of Dean Walker and Deb Whipple.   Instructors included Barry Anderton, MD, Lynnae Napoli, RRT, Mike Madsen, MD, Elaine Bond, DNSC, APRN, CCPN, Heidi McSweeney, NP, Brent Lind, MD, Mike Visick MD, and Lloyd Jensen M.D.  Fifty-nine participants were trained.  It was well organized and developed much enthusiasm among the participants. All are eager to participate as team members in future courses. I enjoyed teaching with all of my experienced colleagues.  I seem to learn some new tricks and techniques each time I am involved with them.  Sharon Eubanks , Director of LDSC  was a keynote speaker during the closing ceremony.  She chronicled her recent HBB development trip to Morocco.
